Malta’s nomad checklist: before and after approval

The March 2026 checklist separates the application file from housing and insurance evidence submitted after approval in principle.

01

Use the correct work category

Residency Malta distinguishes employees, foreign-business owners, and freelancers. Prepare the contract, business, or client documents that establish your own category. The new-application income requirement is €42,000 gross per year.

02

Prepare traceable income and identity records

The checklist asks for three months of complete bank statements showing relevant income credited to the main applicant. It also asks for passport copies, declarations, CV, letter of intent, and police certificates for applicants aged 18 or older. Explain the work with evidence that matches the income records.

03

Prepare family evidence early

Relationships, custody, partnership, and name changes need the supporting records and prescribed English translations. Include accompanying dependants before payment or approval: later additions generally wait until renewal, except newborns. If a minor will not be accompanied by both parents and you lack sole custody, obtain the Agency’s prior approval.

04

Complete the approval-stage documents

After approval in principle, prepare housing for the permit period and comprehensive one-year health cover. Health premiums must be prepaid for the full year; monthly payments and travel-only policies are not accepted. Submit the policy, receipt, benefits table and expense declaration. Renewal has a separate checklist, timing and residence-presence conditions.
