Visa-free, arrival visa, or ETA? Know the difference

A convenient entry route can still require documents, advance approval, or a particular hotel booking.

01

Visa-free still has entry conditions

A visa exemption normally removes the need to obtain a visa for the specified visit. It does not remove passport, funds, accommodation, return-ticket, or border-admission conditions. Read the rule for your ordinary passport and nationality, not a different country’s passport or a diplomatic exemption.

02

An arrival visa is a visa

Rwanda offers arrival visas to all nationalities and a 30-day visa-fee waiver for Commonwealth nationals. That makes the visit convenient for Pakistani travellers, but it is clearer to describe the route as an arrival visa with a fee waiver than as an unconditional exemption.

03

Free can still mean pre-approved

Sri Lanka’s official scheme effective 25 May 2026 includes Pakistani ordinary passports in its free 30-day tourist ETA scheme, with double entry. The ETA must still be obtained before arrival. A waived fee is not permission to skip the application.

04

Check the whole itinerary

Transit permission is separate. A destination may admit you while a connecting country requires a transit visa. Qatar’s eligibility also depends on nationality and residence, and some arrival routes need a Discover Qatar hotel product. Check the official tools using your actual circumstances before committing to flights.
