Start with your real main destination
Apply to the country where you will spend the most time or which is the main purpose of the trip. If the stays are equal, use the first country of entry. Build an itinerary that matches this choice, including the nights in each destination. An appointment being available elsewhere does not change which country is competent.
Make the documents tell the same story
The passport, application, flight reservation, accommodation, leave dates, and insurance should agree. Prepare funds and income evidence that explain your trip budget. Include the employment, business, study, or other records requested by the local checklist. A large unexplained transfer can raise a question that a consistent financial history would answer.
Check the shared rules and the local list
The common file includes a qualifying passport, signed application, photo, trip-purpose documents, accommodation, funds, and travel medical insurance. Insurance must cover the entire Schengen stay and at least €30,000 for emergency care and repatriation. Each destination can request additional local documents, including family records and minor consent.
Leave room for the process
Applications can normally be submitted up to six months before departure and should be lodged at least 15 days before travel. Decisions commonly take 15 days but can extend to 45. Appointment waiting time comes before that assessment. Use the destination guide to open the official application route and complete your checklist before booking.
